Tulum, or the city of Renewal in Mayan, is nestled on the east coast, about two hours drive south of Cancun. The ruins date from about 1200 AD and served as a fortress city.
Come early as this site gets flooded by bus loads of tourists by lunch time. There is, however, a fantastic beach to cool off in before the long drive back to Cancun.
